Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction is accomplished through one-on-one consultation and spiritual guidance with a priest. Help is given to recognize and understand how we should be responding to the Lord's inspiration in our lives. The sacraments are utilized. Most importantly the Sacrament of Reconciliation, scripture reading, or other spiritual reading, may be recommended. The priest will also listen to you, pray with you, and offer advice that will be of help to your particular needs.

Spiritual direction is a form of help, for growth toward holiness, that has been used for centuries in the Catholic Church. Many of the saints have had a Spiritual Director that they have relied upon to keep them focused on the right path.

Sacramental Formation — Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

The Rite of Christian Initiation team members work with sponsors, help plan Wednesday night sessions, are catechists on Sunday mornings, help with the Retreats, and hospitality. This ministry guides individuals who are seeking more knowledge of the Roman Catholic Faith. IT seeks to join their journey of Faith with ours through the initiation Sacraments (Baptism, First Eucharist, Confirmation) at Easter Vigil Mass; and continues the journey to a lifelong seeking out and living the Gospel values in association with the Roman Catholic Church.

The weekly meetings consist of: instructions on the scriptures, teachings, doctrines, traditions, sacraments, and liturgy of the Roman Catholic Faith. This ministry requires 4 to 5 hours weekly.

For further information, or to join the Sacramental Formation team please call Mr. Joe Brown at the Cathedral office at 833-6433.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion serve primarily during Mass at Communion time assisting the Priest. The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may help with either the host or the wine. In addition, some may also take Communion to the homebound. The requirements to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion are few. Attend a training session, attend Mass regularly, believe in the real presence, be confirmed, honor your commitment to serve, and be attempting to live a life of Gospel values.

After training you will be mandated by the Bishop and are then ready to begin serving the Parish community. If the Spirit leads you to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy communion you will find it rewarding.

For further information, or to join the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion team, please call Joe Brown at the Cathedral Office at 833-6433.

Lector – Proclaimer of the Word

Lectors are responsible for proclaiming the word of God during the celebration of the Liturgy. In practical terms, this consists of proclaiming the Hebrew Scripture and then the New Testament reading. The Lector has a responsibility to practice the assigned readings the previous week. Practice is required so that the Lector is able to proclaim the readings with genuine feeling. The Lector also emphasizes the important message that the writer of the passage intends.

Training will be provided to make you feel comfortable with this important ministry. After the training you will grow in confidence and skill. You will then be placed on the Liturgical ministry schedule. If you have a love for the word of God please consider this ministry for sharing your time and talent.

Sacristan / Sexton

Have you ever wondered who prepares the sanctuary for Mass? Who ensures all the vessels used by the Priest such as the chalice and purificator, paten (bread plate), the cups for wine, and the pitcher and basin for washing his hands are ready and in place? What about making sure there are enough hosts and wine for Holy Communion? The sacristan performs all these duties in service to the Parish Community. The sacristan arrives twenty minutes before Mass to prepare for Mass as mentioned above. After Mass, the sacristan cleans the vessels and returns them to their proper places in the sacristy.

Sexton: Keeping a watchful eye on the Cathedral property, especially making sure the Cathedral's doors are opened time and secured after services is the ancient roll of a porter or sexton. This vigilant person takes good care that the Cathedral property is not damaged during the day or night. As the one who has great concern for the Cathedral the sexton insures it's environs are maintained and kept beautiful.
